Rainy retreat beyond the beaches, anyone?! Goa in the monsoons is like discovering a hidden gem within a familiar treasure chest.
While the sun-drenched beaches might be what first comes to mind when you think of Goa, I would actually avoid anything near beaches at all costs during the monsoons (the sea turns really rough and can be unsafe at this time).
But the rainy season unveils a different side of Goa. One that’s lush, vibrant, and full of cultural treasures.
Waterfalls, Pools & Quarries
You want to wait until mid-July for this, but one of the purest joys of Goan monsoons is visiting the waterfalls, quarries and inland water bodies that are relatively safer than rivers and oceans around this time. Adhere to the local authorities’ guidelines, keep the beauty of nature clean and you’ll be able to enjoy and relive your childhood days in lush Goan monsoons.
Dot In The Park in Anjuna has a private quarry that is perhaps your safest bet. Another pool you could use if you are a cafe customer is the one at Ahista Cafe, Mandrem. In fact, most places will allow you pool access for a small fee, if you ask nicely.
Enjoy a Spa Day!
Everyone deserves some TLC and Goa is one of the best places in India to pamper yourself or a loved one with a spa, massage or rejuvenation package.
History & Architecture
Old Goa, one of the former capitals of Goa, is a treasure trove of historical marvels. The monsoon season brings a fresh, green sheen to the landscape, making it a perfect time for leisurely walks. Start at the Basilica of Bom Jesus, renowned for its baroque architecture and the sacred relics of St. Francis Xavier. As you explore, the gentle rain and cooler temperatures make for a peaceful, contemplative experience.
Pro tip: Check out Misu, a new riverside favorite restaurant in Ribandar when you’re in this area.
The Se Cathedral, the largest church in Asia, is another must-see. Its impressive façade and intricate interiors are even more enchanting in the soft, diffused light of a rainy day.
Wander through the nearby St. Cajetan Church with its elegant, yet understated design that contrasts beautifully with the verdant surroundings.
Don’t forget to visit St. Augustine Tower, the remains of a once-grand church that adds a touch of mystery to the landscape. The lush greenery and misty atmosphere create a dramatic backdrop that’s perfect for photography and quiet reflection.
Cultural Experiences
There’s no better time than the monsoons to explore the cultural, local way of living in Goa.
Whether it’s the rich multicultural cuisine, the monsoon festivals like Sao Joao & Chikal Kalo, the architectural wonders or the beauty of Goan music through fado and mando – you’ll be in for multiple pleasant surprises as you realize that Goa is like its signature dessert – the bebinca. Multilayered 🙂

Go Museum Hopping
Goa has some of the most heritage rich and immersive museum experiences you could possibly have. Here are some of my picks:

- Houses Of Goa, Porvorim evokes childlike wonder in anyone with its enchanting architecture and Jovito’s endearing intro.
Don’t miss going to the Mario Gallery right opposite, and if you still have time. Ask for a tour of the equally lovely school in the same precinct.
It’s the kind of school I’d have loved to go to as a kid, with thoughtfully designed architecture by Gerard D’Cunha and Team Architects Anonymous. - Museum Of Goa (MOG) in Pilerne has some amazing art by Goan legend Subodh Kerkar. Also has a fab cafe with Sunday morning events.
- Aguad & the Aguada Jail Museum, Lower Aguada are the most recently developed tourist precinct with spine chilling history, excellent culinary fair and a tranquil setting.
- Alcohol Museum in Calangute is another recent favorite of mine – it’s not for alcoholics as much as it is for the connoisseur of spirits.
Go here for a very interesting walkthrough of the history of alcohol amid a beautifully curated treasure of bottles, garrafas, artefacts and liquor from around the world.
Sr. Armando’s charming storytelling sets the tone for a great experience that you’ll be glad you had! - Bigfoot Goa – Ancestral Goa is a museum and theme park in the village of Loutolim in southern Goa, India, dedicated to rural Goan life. Founded and run by artist Maendra Alvares, it’s an enchanting space that recreates a Goan village in miniature showing what local rural life was like in the past.

Books & a cuppa
The Krishnadas Shama Goa State Central Library is truly a gem of a place, and worth spending an entire day in.
Even if you’re not a member, simply carry an Aadhaar card and you can browse through some of the most wonderful books in English, Konkani, Marathi and Portuguese.
There’s ample of space and literary treasure cross this 5-storied building to make you wish that every library should be like this one.
Cafe Hop & Experiment with Remote Work / Digital Nomadism
Goa is a great place to discover great coffees, great cafes and also experiment with the idea of being a remote worker / digital nomad!
Here are my favorite places for doing this:
Porvorim: DeStress / Third Table / Asro
Panjim: Doolally / Maverick & Farmer / Nada
Assagao: Coffee Culture / Mojigao / Bloom & Brew NOFC / G-Shot
Siolim: Spillhouse / Sabr / Ethico / Alag / Sunday / Sazieta / Hoops Coffee
Vagator, Badem & Anjuna: Jungle / NomadGao / Indiroom / Diavola / Baba Au Rhum
Mandrem: Circle CoWork / Aahista / Odd Table / Hustliq
Morjim: Growbox / Rice Mill / Brisa
Mall & Movie
When was the last time you took a lazy day off and leisurely explored a mall + watched a movie?
Sure you could do this in metro cities, but when you’re on a vacation, there’s no explanation or guilt the next day, and you stay dry the whole time even if it’s pouring outside!
In Porvorim, spend your day at Mall De Goa. In Panjim, split your day across INOX at Old GMC Palace and hop over to Caculo Mall, just 4-5 mins away.
At the time of publishing this post, the DLF Promenade Mall in Patto, Panjim is still under construction but will soon become yet another great option.
If it’s not raining, you could optionally spend the evening enjoying the sunset by the lighthouse right behind Kala Academy.

Lazy Lunch / Sunday Brunch
If you’re a foodie like me, there’s no better way to indulge and unwind while catching up with friends or family like a lazy lunch or Sunday brunch.
Check out the best ones on the District app by Zomato or Scenes by Swiggy.
Long Drives
Enough said.

Sports & Active Outdoor Adventures
Racquet spots are taking over Goa like the rest of the world, so check them out on the Hudle app if you’re looking to sweat and socialize!
It’s also a great time for cycling, hiking, trekking and camping but please ensure you go with a local if not a local tour operator.
